March 10, 2023, CRESTON, IOWA--Three Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students—Alex Bates of Chariton, Brenna Bruns of Greenfield, and Hollie Washburn of King City, Missouri—were recently named to the 2023 All-Iowa Academic Team during a recognition ceremony sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and held Monday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m., at Curate in Des Moines.

Bates plans to earn his Associate of Science from SWCC this spring and transfer to a four-year college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. During his time at SWCC, he has been involved in SWCC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Phi Theta Kappa, TRIO-Student Support Services, and has been a student-athlete on the track & field team. In addition, he works at Hy-Vee. He has been on the President’s List each semester and was named to the 2021-22 NJCAA All-Academic First Team.

Bruns earned a diploma in automotive repair technology in June 2022. She is currently working toward her Associate of Applied Science degree in automotive repair technology and business administration. After graduation, she hopes to gain experience working as an auto repair technician and eventually own her own automotive repair shop. During her time at SWCC, Bruns has been active as the vice president of Student Senate, vice president of leadership for Phi Theta Kappa, member of the automotive club, and peer tutor.

Washburn is a student in SWCC’s licensed practical nursing program. Once she receives her diploma in practical nursing in the summer of 2023, she plans to return for the fall 2023 semester in the registered nursing program. Washburn is a member of Student Senate and Phi Theta Kappa, and is a nursing scholarship recipient as well.

Phi Theta Kappa International serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students worldwide. Joe Pastorino, business instructor, is the advisor for SWCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter.
